Oliver | Six Months

Oliver is back in action, a full three months older with a lady killing smile. The light this evening was insane and the little dude was unstoppable. He powered through a little grumpy spell and worked the camera. I love documenting the first year of life, watching these little people grow up and develop their personality.. It’s crazy how much they can change every three months, keepin’ it fresh.

Heather and John

we returned to the same quiet beach on lake michigan where john asked heather to marry him.

the story started on a rainy night in bridgman michigan where john’s family rented a cottage last summer. john proposed while they walked down the beach. they didn’t get as many pictures as they’d like because it was raining so we decided it’d be the perfect place for their engagement session. the week leading up to the session threatened us clouds and storm, and were still unsure what we’d be dealing with on the morning of. we made the call, we went for it, and the storm held off just long enough.

Conor Ryan - I heart you two

Adam

we ran around downtown grand rapids on a quiet, cloudy afternoon, sneaking into train yards and exploring the old warehouses on the south side of the city. the foggy day was like a dream with radiohead and pretty lights as the soundtrack. adam is a person who takes life in stride and always makes the best out of everything. he is a creative and a free spirit with a zeal for life and the occasional documentary.

i’ve challenged myself to shoot once a week, so here is the first of hopefully many to come.

Miles | Newborn

Here’s little Miles! He is my boyfriend’s first little nephew, and he comes with a pretty good story. I was in my car on a gorgeous, sunny Saturday morning, driving to Rockford for Laura’s baby shower. I couldn’t have been five minutes down the road when I got a text from Drew saying “Miles has arrived!” I was confused as to what he meant and what was going on and immediately called him. He told me (excited and out of breath) that Miles had been born an hour before, two full weeks before his due date. The shower was still on and we had a beautiful morning of joyful tears and excitement for a brand new baby to join the ranks. Miles is pretty special, not only is he Matt and Laura’s first baby, he is the first nephew, grandchild, and great-grandchild in the family. Safe to say this little dude has already seen the lens-side of a camera in his first two weeks about as many times as I have in my whole life. The feeling you have when you see and hold a newborn is amazing, mixed with fear of being able to hurt it just by moving the wrong way, awe at how small a person can be, an overwhelming sense of how beautiful life is, that newborn smell…. and an extreme urge to just SMUSH their little face into nothing. (That last part is weird, but so true!) I know you know what I’m talking about, the feeling is real and I wanted to smush Miles little face the whole time I was photographing him. He is such a sweetheart and couldn’t have been born to better parents. I’m sure you’ll see more frames of him here and there.. I just can’t resist.

Carleigh - LOVE LOVE LOVE jill..

carleigh

Meet my beautiful friend Carleigh. She lives in Holland and works in a greenhouse and is about to leave for a semester in Greece (yeah we won’t even go there…). We met this week so I could photograph her for a project in school and I just love these images so much I had to share. Oh, soon enough we’ll be able to wear short sleeves and not have to sprint from the car to the front door with our hoods up and our scarves double wrapped… fingers crossed.

Chelsea - Jill these photos are amazing! I might be bias because I love the girl in red but really, her playful personality really shines through in these photos! Can’t wait to see more of your work!
